Eyes Up (1Jn 2:12-14)

The number one error made by drivers jockeying a fast car through a winding track is that their eyes are too low. They focus on what is just in front of them. That is a recipe for finding the in-field or outer wall. Drivers need to keep their eyes up to navigate successfully.

The beloved disciple John is writing to believers of all kinds. For each and all his advice is: Keep your eyes up. Don’t focus on the immediate situation, don’t be overwhelmed by insecurity, uncertainty or despair. Instead look upward and think on the spiritual benefits that are true for every believer.

  • We are forgiven through Christ.
  • We know God, Father, Son and Spirit and are known by Him.
  • We have overcome the evil one, because Jesus has destroyed his work.

Jesus’ victory over Satan is made effective in our lives because God lives in us by His Spirit. We are in and under the influence of God’s presence, His power and His precepts. That is why we can love others in action and in truth. That is why we can discern truth and falsehood. That is why we are courageous even in the face of opposition. Because God who is in us is greater than the Prince of this World.

What one benefit of faith will you look to this week to remind you that you are an overcomer in Christ?

1 John 2:12-14 (NIV)

12 I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.

14 I write to you, dear children,
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
