What is with the Mosaic Law?

As a kid I begrudgingly took piano lessons. My motivation was less than a turkey around Thanksgiving, but somehow I learned the basics of reading music. Sheet music is a great analogy for the purpose of the Mosaic Law.

A musical score clearly indicates the notes required, if the tune is to be played rightly. Similarly, the Law makes known the commands we are to obey, if our lives are to be in tune with God. But the Law does not make us a saint, anymore than sheet music makes one a pianist.

Each of us have an undeniable inclination to transgress God’s laws, to live out of tune with God’s Kingdom. Because of our disobedience the Law cannot impart abundant life, but only show us to be under the power of sin (Gal 3:21 NIV).

Praise God! What the Law couldn’t do, God did through Jesus. He redeemed us from the power of sin by becoming cursed for us (Gal 3:13-14 NIV). In trusting in Jesus atoning work, our old self was figuratively crucified with Jesus as He literally hung on the cross.

Now we are a new creation, Christ lives in us by the Spirit, and God’s laws are written on our hearts. The music of God’s Kingdom comes from inside as we play out God’s grace in notes of faith, hope and love.

How are you playing God’s music?
